Whitepaper: 6 Door-Side Reasons Smart Lock Installations Fail
The pattern behind most failed installations
Most smart lock returns and stalled projects trace back to the door, not the lock. A lock that looks right in a catalog can still be mechanically incompatible with the specific door it must fit. The six factors below explain why, in terms of mechanics rather than brands.
1. Door thickness outside the spindle and screw range
Every lock ships with a spindle and mounting screws designed for a thickness window. Doors thinner than the window leave the spindle protruding and handles loose; thicker doors prevent engagement entirely. Composite and reinforced doors frequently exceed standard windows.
2. Door material changes the mounting method
Wooden doors accept standard drilling. Metal doors need different fixings and can shield radio signal. Glass doors require clamp-style locks with no drilling at all. A lock designed for one material generally cannot be adapted on site to another.
3. Handing mismatch
Left-hinged, right-hinged, inward and outward opening doors change which way the latch faces and how the handle rotates. Some locks are field-reversible, many are not, and an outward-opening exterior door often needs a different weather-sealing arrangement as well.
4. Existing bore holes and mortise dimensions
Retrofits must cover or reuse existing holes. Backset distance, cross-bore diameter, and the old mortise pocket dimensions constrain which lock bodies physically fit. A mismatch here means visible holes, structural weakening, or a lock that cannot seat flush.
5. Multipoint and hook-bolt mechanisms
Many markets use doors with multipoint locking driven by lifting the handle, or mortise bodies with hook bolts. A smart lock must be designed to drive that specific mechanism; a standard single-latch lock cannot operate a multipoint door and will leave most of its locking points unused.
6. Outdoor exposure and temperature
Gates and exterior doors expose the lock to rain, dust, direct sun, and temperature extremes that affect seals, batteries, and fingerprint sensors. An indoor-rated lock installed outdoors is a predictable early failure, independent of every other factor above.
What this means for your enquiry
A front photo alone cannot reveal thickness, backset, mortise dimensions, or mechanism type. Before sampling, complete a door measurement sheet and provide four photos: front, rear, door edge, and the existing lock body. Hotel and apartment projects should also state room count, credential methods, and PMS requirements, because platform integration constrains model choice as much as the door does.
